WOMEN IN POKER

WOMEN IN POKER

Even though poker continues to be a male dominion, the number of women poker players is fast rising. If you take a quick look at any card room, even if it is online poker, you will find that there is at least one woman at every table. It is true that most women poker players start out by participating in low-limit cash games. While most poker tournaments are male-only, those organized for women give the participants a chance to mingle with fellow women players and gradually move up the ranks.

Sexism is an issue at times, in this game as most poker players are male. For instance, when a woman does well at a table, she complimented by saying, “You play like a man.” What women can do is not react vehemently to such statements, but take them as compliments. In case of online poker, women can choose unisex names to avoid male intimidation.

About 95% of the poker players are men and the remaining 5% are women. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that we will find any women at the final tables. Thus, women should be given a fair chance to master the game and move to higher levels. In fact, online poker is a good way to learn the game. In fact, there are quite a few women who are great poker players and make a good living from it. Men should thus, abstain from making generalized statements about the poor level of play from women. It does not always hold true that women are less aggressive for there are quite a few dangerous women poker players. Women however, must keep in mind that the best way to overcome the sexist issue is by learning proper poker etiquette, the rules of the game and last of all, win consistently.
